Determinants of Parents for Female Children Circumcision in Indonesia
Background: Female circumcision is still in debate. Some people consider that female circumcision may harmful to health. Meanwhile others consider female circumcision as a thing that taught by the religion.
Objective: To analyze female circumcision and factors that influence parents to circumcise their daughter in Indonesia.
Methods: This study is non-intervention analysis research by using data of 2013 Riskesdas. The data are contained of 14.859 parents who have daughter with age of 0 until 11 years old. The data are analyzed based on socio demographic and Girl’s circumcision behavior by using univariate, bivariate and multivariate analyzes method.
Result: From the total respondent are found about 33.2% circumcise their daughter. The interesting fact is that 51.8% respondent are living in urban areas. Considering the age of the girls that have circumcised shows 71.8% are done in the age of 1 until 3 month after birth. Around 51.7% are having their daughters circumcised in the midwives. Factors that influence parents to circumcise their daughters are age, education, occupation, quintile of ownership index, and area of residence.
Conclusion: Female circumcision in Indonesia is relatively high. Female circumcision done when the child was aged 1–3 years and are mostly done by midwives.
Suggestion: It needs to spread correct information about female circumcision, especially for parents who willing to circumcise their daughters. The circumcision should be performed by medical practioners in order to avoid illegal practices which may be detrimental to the health of the children.
